What you need to know

When looking for a "metal fabrication company near me," there are a few things you should find out when choosing a company to partner up with. We've compiled a list of some of those thing, knocking out the leg work for you.

What happens when I hire you?
We set up a time to meet at your home to go over design and "want-list." We create the design and submit an estimate along with the design to the customer. We'll make small design changes as needed and convert the estimate to an invoice which you'll sign. We require a 50 - 60% deposit depending on project. We accept cash, check, credit and debit cards. Once the deposit has been paid, you go onto our schedule. Typically, we are booked out anywhere from 2- 6 weeks.

What is the building process like? How long will you be in our home or business?

When we come out to go over the design with you, we'll take measurements, get fittings - essentially getting hard numbers to fabricate. Then we'll go back to the shop, fabricate your creation and finish, paint and powder coat it. Lastly, we'll come out and install it. On-site installation takes anywhere from 1-7 days typically depending on project size. The remainder of your payment is due upon completion.

How do I find the right metal fabrication company for me, my budget and my specific project?
Get several bids. Email is a great resource, as most good fabricators are busy during their days creating projects and working on-site. If a fabricator tells you that something can't be done, get another opinion or, better yet, come to us. We've created projects for clients who were previously told what they were wanting could not be done because their previous fabricator did not have the skillset to build it.

What sets Austin Custom Metals apart?
ACM is your high-end design and fabrication business. We are a luxury design and fabrication company and we specialize in larger projects. Most of the time, we don’t get involved with small, around-the-house projects. We are not simply welders. We are creators, designers, executers of metal fabrication, here to bring to life something better than what you originally imagined. When you're wanting to change the aesthetic of your entire space, give us a call. We specialize in creating things that will set your house apart from every other.

What are some red flags to look out for when interviewing different fabricators?
Ask for referrals. Referrals are important. Sometimes fabricators will pop up in a new area, do crappy work and disappear. So ask for referrals. Don’t always rely on online reviews - they can be bought and poor ones, dismissed.

What do I need to know about safety integrity code standards?
I’m OSHA certified and we carry general liability insurance. Safety is the number one priority for us, and I would never install something that I wouldn’t install in my own house with my own family. If I ever feel like safety is in question, it has to go to an engineer.

What is custom metal fabrication?
Good question. Metal fabrication is the process of creating metal structures from raw metal materials. It includes cutting metal, fabricating it and welding it to create a final product. That final product could be something included in your remodeling project or something created for a new home build in Austin, TX. Over the years, we have created many things with raw materials: custom staircases, gates, fences, pool railings and decks.

What does custom fabrication looks like?
We are seasoned professionals in working with steel, metal and wood, so your final creation will be made up of one or all of these materials. Your pergola could have a metal structure and a wooden roof, or your fence could have wooden slats with metal accents. The combination possibilities when working with these raw materials are endless.

Price point - what are some things to take into consideration?
Always ask for itemized bid instead of flat number. If your fabricator gives you a flat number for an estimate, that is a red flag because ultimately, you don't know what you're going to end up paying for. If you get a flat number for an estimate, ask for an itemized bid or find a new fabricator. Another good question to ask is how much more or less the final price usually ends up being from the initial bid. At Austin Custom Metals, your bid price is the price you will pay, unless you make large changes to the design during the project that require additional materials and/or labor.
